REVIEW: Good Traditional Teochew kuih in Johor Bahru, Malaysia: Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih 阿嬷潮州糕

Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih 阿嬷潮州糕 is a beloved destination for Teochew pastries, with a history spanning over 80 years, now carried on by the fourth generation. I recently visited their third branch at Austin Heights! The shop maintains its signature house-like facade, but the interior is infused with a charming French vintage vibe. Wooden tables and chairs, vintage window designs, and a soothing palette of soft green and beige create a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for a relaxing meal.

Address: 22, Jalan Austin Heights 8/4, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Opening Hours: 7.30am - 5pm, Closed on Monday

Gula Melaka Steam Cake (马来糕): This adorable, heart-shaped steamed cake is made with palm sugar (Gula Melaka). Its cute design matches its fluffy and moist texture, delivering a caramel flavor with a hint of sweetness that melts in your mouth.

Teochew Rice Kuih (潮州饭桃粿): This kuih features a soft, translucent exterior and is stuffed with a savory filling of seasoned sticky rice, mushrooms, dried shrimp, and peanuts. Its chewy texture offers a delightful contrast to the umami-packed filling, providing a harmonious blend of savory and nutty notes that evoke the comforting essence of classic Teochew flavors.

Ah Ma Chicken Kuey Teow (Dry) (阿嬷干捞鸡丝粿条): This dry-style kuey teow dish showcases glossy, silky flat rice noodles tossed in a flavorful, slightly sweet soy-based sauce. Topped with generous portions of shredded chicken, boiled fish cakes, crunchy bean sprouts, and fried shallots, the dish combines tender and crispy textures in every bite. The springy noodles and juicy chicken enhance the overall taste, creating a richly satisfying and comforting meal.

Ah Ma Signature Coffee (阿嬷特调咖啡): Served in a sleek black cup, this unique coffee blend is aromatic and full-bodied, with a smooth and rich flavor profile.
