The Hainan Story Launches Its First-Ever Hainanese High Tea Set, Available 24Hours

Living up to its promise to bring the best of Hainanese cuisine and culture to Singapore, The Hainan Story is proud to launch its first-ever Hainanese high tea set. The three-tiered set will present the best of Hainanese teatime favorites paired with a choice of Singapore Style hot beverage, all at a reasonable price of S$19.90 per person (minimum of two pax for dine-in) and is one for the high tea fanatics.

Unlike other afternoon tea sets, The Hainan Story’s High Tea Set is available 24hours. Available exclusively at The Hainan Story Hotel Boss, the set is available all day so everyone can relax and enjoy their favorite Hainanese tea and sweets whenever they fancy.

Hainanese Tea for Two

Begin your Hainanese tea experience with the top tier where 2 pieces of assorted cookies sit alongside 2 slices of Swiss Rolls.

On rotation, you’ll have fragrant Hae Bee Hiam Cookies 南洋虾米, savory delight made with homemade hae bee hiam, Ondeh Ondeh Cookies 海南椰糖饼 that puts front and center the delightful mix of walnuts, pandan and coconut zest, or Hainanese Kopi Guyou Cookies 海南传统咖啡牛油饼perfect for pairing with coffee. For the Swiss Rolls, look forward to the Hainanese Coconut Pandan Roll 椰子班籣瑞士卷, made with fresh pandan and coconut with a creamy pandan fudge center or Nanyang Yam Orh Nee Roll 南洋芋泥瑞士卷 that brings a pretty purple roll with coconut milk and fragrant fried shallots mixed into the yam paste. There’s also the  Sea Salt Gula Melaka Kaya Roll 海盐棕榈咖椰醬瑞士卷 that presents the best fragrance of gula Melaka in a kaya filling with a touch of sea salt or Premium Belgium Chocolate Roll 比利時巧克力瑞士卷 that will delight every discerning chocolate lover.

The second tier presents 2 pieces of yibua as well as honey toast cubes.

For the uninitiated, the yibua is a Hainanese steamed dumpling traditionally served during weddings and babies’ full moons. Made with glutinous rice and potato flour and filled with a sweetened mixture of palm sugar, jaggery red sugar, grated coconut, ginger, and crushed roasted peanut, it is typically wrapped with sheets of banana leaves before steamed to a pillowy soft treat. First sight of it might remind some of the more famous ang Ku kueh, but the yi bua stands out with its addition of peanuts that lend it a distinct crunch.

The bottom tier brings the savories made up of 2 pieces of Crispy Prawn Fritters, 2 pieces of Hainanese Har Chou, and 4 skewers of Hainanese Yuan Yang Satay complete with cucumber, onions, peanut sauce, and pineapple sauce.

Available in pork and chicken, the Yuan Yang Satay are perfectly grilled morsels of meat on skewers made to pair with a novel double-dip for double the flavors: dip it first in the traditional peanut sauce then add a little something special with a pineapple sauce made savory with honey, lemongrass, chili and a secret mix of spices. This unconventional mix takes inspiration from the flavors and spices of the Nanyang region of Hainan.

Wash all above down with a choice of Singapore Style hot beverage of coffee or tea.

The King of Hainan Island

Recommended to go with the High Tea set is the Beary Cute Coconut Dessert (Qing Bu Liang) $5.90 per bowl that is so renowned in Hainan that it is deemed the King of Hainan Island. The popular Hainanese summertime dessert is a bowl of sweet and cold coconut milk, filled with watermelon, pineapple, raisins, sweet potatoes, peas, and jujube. Depending on the region, it may also come with ice cream, mung beans, taro, jelly, sweet corn, and quail eggs.

The Hainan Story serves up a version with coconut water, taro balls, red kidney beans, pearl sago, coconut jelly, and honey sea coconut before topping it off with shaved coconut ice. The cherry on top of the sundae is a cute frozen iced bear also made with coconut water that will appear to swim in your bowl of qing bu Liang as you dig through it.

From 16 September - 15 October, enjoy Beary Cute Coconut Dessert (Qing Bu Liang) at 50% OFF with purchase of The Hainan Story's Hainanese High Tea Set. The dessert will be priced at a top-up of $2.95 (u.p. $5.90) per bowl, limited to two redemptions per high tea set ordered.
