Joy Luck Teahouse Adds Chicken Char Siu Pineapple Bun and Chicken Pie to Its Line-up of Authentic Hong Kong Snacks from 15 October 2021

Fans of Joy Luck Teahouse can look forward to two new menu mainstays this month: Chicken Char Siu Pineapple Bun and Chicken Pie. The Hong Kong favorites will be available from 15 October 2021 onwards, only in stores at all eight Joy Luck Teahouse branches.  

Chicken Char Siu Pineapple Bun (菠萝鸡肉叉烧包)

The Chicken Char Siu Pineapple Bun (菠萝鸡肉叉烧包) (S$3.20) hits the perfect balance of savory and sweet. Think soft, fluffy bread with a crumbly golden crust made following the time-honored recipe by Hong Kong’s esteemed Kam Kee Café, which is stuffed with caramelized char siu. The char siu is made with tender chicken chunks — the whole bun does not contain any pork or lard. 

Gai Pie (鸡批)

Also known as Gai Pie (鸡批), the Chicken Pie (S$3.20) is a staple in most pastry shops in Hong Kong. The chicken pie was originally a creation from the United Kingdom — Hong Kongers have since adapted it to their taste preferences. Joy Luck's rendition boasts chunks of chicken, diced carrots, peas, corn, and potato. The creamy bechamel sauce brings all the ingredients together. The crust is crumbly, buttery, and slightly sweet, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture. The top of the crust has a crisscross diamond pattern, which is customarily imprinted on chicken pies in Hong Kong.
