REVIEW: Good Grilled fish cafe in Kamakura, Japan: Cafe Yoridokoro (ヨリドコロ)

Yoridokoro (ヨリドコロ) is another discovery I made on Xiao Hong Shu. They serve Japanese set lunch with grilled fish, or "yakizakana teishoku," typically consisting of a variety of dishes served together in a set menu.

Address: 1 Chome-12-16 Inamuragasaki, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0024, Japan

Opening Hours: 7am - 5.15pm

Closed on Tuesday

I ordered their House Mackerel set which of course comes with grilled fish, rice, miso soup, pickles, and salad and I ordered whitebaits as a side dish.

Grilled fish: The fish has been seasoned and grilled until it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This kind of fish is popular with this kind of lunch set. The meat is firm and meaty with flaky flesh.

Rice: A bowl of steamed white rice is served alongside the grilled fish. However, I chose the Tamaki Kaki Gohan which is a popular Japanese dish that consists of rice topped with raw egg. The name translates to "egg over rice" in English.

What's unique about this cafe is its Tamago Kaki Gohan! If you choose Tamago Kaki Gohan when ordering, the waiter will bring the eggs and whisk first. The way to eat eggs in this store is a bit extra. First, you need to separate the egg yolk from the egg white. Begin whipping the egg whites until they become foamy and frothy. It is really tiring to beat it by hand! Add the fluffy egg white to the rice, followed by the perfect orange egg yolk and you're done! To be honest, the texture of the whipped egg white is indeed different. When you eat it, you will have the ふわふわ (fuwa fuwa) cloud-like texture that Japanese people prefer.

Miso soup: A small bowl of miso soup, which is made from fermented soybean paste, is included in the set menu.

Pickles: A small side dish of pickled daikon radish and cucumber, is served as a palate cleanser.

Salad: A small side salad, often made with fresh greens and a light dressing, is a common accompaniment to the main dish.

There were a variety of sides such as natto, chilled tofu, seaweed, kimchi, plum, egg, and boiled whitebait. I chose the boiled whitebait knowing it is the most significant seafood dish in Shonan Area and there are many restaurants serving it. The taste is mild and slightly sweet, with a delicate and tender texture.
