10 Fish Soup stalls to try in Singapore!

Experience the popularity of fish soup in Singapore, where it is readily available at local food stalls, hawker centers, and seafood restaurants. This delightful and flavorsome soup is crafted using fresh fish, vegetables, and occasionally, seafood.

Singapore offers various versions of fish soup, with the renowned Teochew-style fish soup standing out as a favorite. Influenced by the culinary traditions of the Teochew dialect group in China, this style boasts a clear broth prepared by simmering fish bones and heads, resulting in a delectably rich taste. The soup is then generously filled with sliced fish fillets, tofu, tomatoes, and vibrant leafy greens like lettuce or spinach.

Complementing the fish soup experience, it is commonly accompanied by steamed rice or rice noodles, making it a fulfilling and satisfying meal. To further enhance the flavors, fresh cilantro, spring onions, and occasionally fried shallots are used as garnishes, adding an extra layer of taste to the dish.

1. Bao Gong XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

Bao Gong XO Fish Head Bee Hoon is located in the West Coast area at Clementi West St 2. As a XO fish bee hoon lover, I would say this bowl of fish soup was above average. The flavor of the XO doesn't overshadow the soup, and I could detect its aroma. Their fish was similarly pretty thick and appeared to have previously been fried, but it had a good texture and wasn't overcooked. The milky broth is entirely created from fish stock and bones and does not contain any milk. This was really tasty and rich.

2. Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

Here's another spot for some comforting fish soup! Back at Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hoon! I have tried their delicious san lou hor fun before, so I am trying their XO sliced fish soup with rice today. The XO already hits me in terms of fragrance when this was served.

The rich and milky soup was also the result of boiled fish bones. This had a strong XO flavor, but I didn't find it to be overpowering. Despite the fact that there were only four large chunks of fish and plenty of cabbages in this soup, it was tasty and goes well with rice.

3. Fai Kee Fishhead Bee Hoon

Fai Kee Fishhead Bee Hoon is located at Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre. The hawker centre is quite quiet at night when most stalls are closed. They have been in operation for about 50 years and span two family generations, specializing in traditional Cantonese-style zi char. I got their sliced fish soup, which contains numerous fish slices. The broth was delicious and rich. consuming every last drop of this! This stall is quite off the radar! discovering yet another hidden gem. Isn't this the perfect meal for the chilly weather? 🥺

4. Chun Tat Kee (Balestier)

Chun Tat Kee (Balestier) on Hong Kong Street is famed for its fish head beehoon. You may choose between the fish head or the fish, with an extra $3.50 for one spoonful of XO. I assumed they would have added the XO before serving, but Auntie advised me to remind her to do so. She then fetched a bottle of XO and spooned some into my soup. I mean, the soup was already fairly tasty before adding the XO. There were four or five large pieces of fish. They were tender yet bland.

5. Ka Soh

Missing Ka Soh's Fish Slices with Noodles so here I am at their Greenwood outlet. Although delicious, the milky white broth wasn't as rich as I had anticipated. There were plenty of fresh fish slices and vegetables. I also ordered the vegetables to go with the noodles. So garlicky and yummy!

6)  Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon

🍲🍲🍲 I have been on the hunt for nice fish soup! Here's another stall discovered at Maxwell Food Centre. Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon specializes in Cantonese Style Fish Soup which is a richer version compared to the Teochew style.

I ordered the Sliced fish bee hoon which comes with this perfectly cooked thin bee hoon with plenty of slices of fish in this delectable cloudy soup. Milk was added to mine. The soup was so savory, milky, and creamy. Crazily addictive too! The fish wasn't the most tender but I appreciate that they remove the fish skin.

7) Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon 🥣 华记XO鱼头米粉 is located at Old Airport Road Food Centre. This XO fish soup stall is such a surprising find! I was supposed to eat at another stall but that was closed and this was a few stalls away from that and they had a snaking queue.

The broth was boiled with fish bones for a minimum of six hours to get this kind of thick, rich, and milky broth. Love that the XO was just a subtle taste and not overwhelming at all. They were also SUPER generous with so many tender fish slices. This was so good!! 🥺🥺🥺

8)
Xin Yuan Ji 新源记鱼头炉

Finally eating at Xin Yuan Ji 新源记鱼头炉 again! This shop which is located at Tan Quee Lan Street is always full house! We ordered their double fish beehoon w milk and double fish soup with rice.

Let me tell you, that Teochew-style fish soup was on point! They loaded it up with fish slices, tomatoes, and veggies like xiao bai cai and tofu. The broth was light and clear, with just the right amount of sweetness from the veggies and fish. And my bowl came with milk, which added a creamy texture that made me wanna snuggle up with a cozy bowl and a spoon.

The mackerel fish slices were next-level fresh and hefty. None of that wimpy thin stuff you find at some places. These were thick and chunky, with a tender and flaky texture that I couldn't get enough of. And the fried fish? Don't even get me started. The batter was thin and crispy, not greasy or over-fried. It was the perfect balance of crunch and flavor.

Opening Hours: 11.30am - 11pm

9) Leng Kee Fish Soup

Leng Kee Fish Soup at Bukit Timah Food Centre came up in the search for good fish soup in Bukit Timah. I was pretty skeptical as to whether they are really that good as some shops that sell fish soup has really bland or mediocre ones.

The first impression was that the cloudy soup has a lot of fish slices, though lacking in other ingredients such as tofu or tomatoes. Even better when the fish slices are so tender! The fish soup is full-bodied with natural sweetness coming from the fish.

Definitely my kind of comfort food!

Opening Hours: 9am - 6pm

10) Tekong Island Fish Soup

Tekong Island Fish Soup caught my eye at Takashimaya Food Hall. I wasn't interested in Tekong, but I was curious to try their food. 😂🤣

Okay, they're called Tekong Fish Soup because they used to live there. The bowls at Tekong Island Fish Soup come with a small heaping of fried hae bee and omelet ribbons, which was a nice change from the usual. His “Tekong-style” fish soup is boiled with chicken and fish bones, goji berries, and hae bee. The soup here is delicious. It had the right amount of sweetness and flavor. Not to mention the slices of fresh batang fish.
