Where to Eat in River Valley: Feng Ji Chicken Rice Serves Tender Hainanese Chicken and Homestyle Zi Char

Feng Ji Chicken Rice is a popular spot along River Valley known for serving comforting Singaporean and Chinese homestyle dishes in a casual, air-conditioned restaurant setting. While its signature Hainanese chicken rice is the main draw — featuring tender, juicy chicken paired with fragrant, flavourful rice — the menu goes far beyond the classic staple, offering an extensive range of zi char–style plates like claypot tofu, fried noodles, stir-fried vegetables, and seafood dishes.

I ordered their chicken rice set, but swapped it for a drumstick. The plate features neatly sliced poached chicken, glistening with a light sheen that hints at its tenderness and natural juiciness. Beside it sits a portion of fragrant chicken rice — fluffy, slightly oily, and golden from being cooked in chicken stock and fat. A pair of soy-braised eggs adds richness, while a handful of roasted peanuts brings a crunchy, savoury contrast.

The set is completed with sides served separately: a bowl of clear chicken soup, and a serving of oyster sauce vegetables — crisp, vibrant greens lightly blanched, drizzled with savoury oyster sauce, and topped with fragrant fried garlic for extra aroma. A small dish of bright red chili sauce sits ready for dipping, adding that signature tangy heat.
