Commonwealth, a subzone of Queenstown in Singapore, is a hidden gem for food lovers looking to explore hawker food, local delights, and traditional flavors. The area is best known for the Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre, a two-story hawker center serving the community since 1969. Renovated in 1998, it now features a bright and airy ambiance, perfect for enjoying some of the best cheap eats in Singapore.
1. Hong Kee Porridge 鸿记粥
Hong Kee Porridge 鸿记粥 at Commonwealth Crescent Market and Food Centre, is a stall with over 50 years of history serving comforting bowls of porridge.
I tried the Pork Porridge, which featured sliced pork, liver, and handmade meatballs seasoned with pepper and spring onions. Despite its slightly watery appearance, the porridge was smooth and flavorful, delivering savory-sweet comfort.
The Century Egg Porridge was generously loaded with century egg pieces, adding a robust flavor and exciting texture contrast to the creamy porridge. Both dishes were satisfying and heartwarming.

2. Fai Kee Fish Head Bee Hoon
Fai Kee Fish Head Bee Hoon, located at Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre, is a hidden gem with 50 years of history spanning two family generations. Specializing in traditional Cantonese-style zi char, the stall operates in a quieter hawker setting during the evening.
I tried their Sliced Fish Soup, which featured thick, fresh fish slices and vegetables. The rich, flavorful broth, likely the result of hours of boiling fish bones, had no fishy taste—making it irresistible to the last drop.

3. GuangZhou Mian Shi wanton noodle
I was at Tanglin Halt Market to try out GuangZhou Mian Shi wanton noodles, a famous stall with a constant queue. The noodles were springy without any alkaline taste, and the wanton was nice and plump, but the char siew wasn't very nice and was dry. Go try if you're around Tanglin halt.
