CIBI Breakfast: Japanese Breakfast Plates in Collingwood, Melbourne

Grilled salmon, rolled omelette, rice and miso soup—CIBI’s breakfast gives you a reason to start your Melbourne morning with something beyond toast.

If you’re searching for Japanese breakfast in Melbourne, CIBI in Collingwood serves breakfast plates inspired by co-founder Meg’s grandmother’s home cooking. The current menu offers both a salmon-based Traditional plate and a More Vegetable option.

For the third instalment of this Asian breakfast series, we’re heading to Keele Street for a meal built around several components—and checking the service times that matter when planning a visit.

What Is Included in CIBI’s Japanese Breakfast?

The Traditional Japanese Breakfast Plate is listed at A$30 and includes:

  • Grilled New Zealand Ora king salmon.

  • Free-range tamagoyaki, a Japanese rolled omelette.

  • Seasonal vegetable accompaniments.

  • Potato salad.

  • CIBI’s rice blend.

  • Miso soup.

Rather than one large toast-based dish, this gives you several elements to move between. Try the components separately, then alternate bites of rice, fish, vegetables and soup.

For a first visit, the Traditional plate would be a straightforward introduction if you enjoy salmon and eggs in the morning.

The More Vegetable Breakfast Plate

CIBI also lists a More Vegetable Japanese Breakfast Plate at A$28.50. It includes cooked seasonal vegetables, tamagoyaki, vegetable accompaniments, potato salad, rice and miso soup.

This provides an alternative for diners who would prefer vegetables to salmon. It still contains egg, so it shouldn’t be mistaken for a vegan breakfast.

If you have dietary requirements, check the complete preparation with the staff. Choosing the most suitable plate from the outset is easier than assuming every component can be substituted.

Natto, Umeboshi and an Optional Extra

For A$8, the published menu offers an Ultimate Add-On containing natto, umeboshi, nori and seasonal pickled vegetables.

That adds another set of flavours and textures to explore. If fermented soybeans or sour plum are unfamiliar, ask the staff how they suggest enjoying them with the breakfast.

The base plate already includes several components, so choose the extra because you want to try those ingredients rather than feeling that the meal requires it.

CIBI Breakfast Times: Weekdays Versus Weekends

Timing is important when planning breakfast in Collingwood.

CIBI’s official menu page lists weekday breakfast from 8am to 11:30am. On weekends and public holidays, it advertises all-day breakfast, with the kitchen closing at 3pm and the café closing at 4pm.

When you visitBreakfast planning
WeekdaysArrive during the 8am–11:30am breakfast service
Weekends and public holidaysBreakfast menu available through kitchen service, ending at 3pm

Check the latest menu before leaving, especially if you’re travelling specifically for the Japanese breakfast plate.

Other Breakfast Choices

If someone in your group prefers another style of breakfast, CIBI’s weekday menu also lists Mum’s scrambled eggs, koji baked egg and miso baked egg.

The scrambled eggs can be served on sourdough or CIBI’s rice blend, while the miso baked egg includes sweet miso, roasted eggplant, pumpkin and provolone.

That gives a mixed-preference group options without everyone needing to order the same plate.

More Than a Collingwood Café

CIBI also has a design store and grocer, with tableware, household goods and pantry products forming part of the wider venue.

Allow some browsing time if that interests you. Breakfast can become the starting point for a slower Collingwood outing rather than a quick stop between other plans.

The official website lists the Café Restaurant as open daily from 8am to 4pm, with the kitchen closing at 3pm. Café bookings are available on weekdays only. These hours differ from those of the grocer and coffee bar.

The published weekend menu specifies an 11% weekend surcharge and 17.5% public-holiday surcharge, so factor those into your budget.

Plan Your Japanese Breakfast in Melbourne

Choose the Traditional plate if salmon is your preference, or consider More Vegetable for a different preparation. Then decide whether the natto-and-pickle add-on interests you.

For a weekday visit, keep the breakfast cutoff in mind. For a weekend outing, leave enough time to order before the kitchen closes and browse afterwards.

Would you choose the salmon breakfast plate or the vegetable version?
