REVIEW: UMA UMA RAMEN - HAKATA RAMEN IN MILLENIA WALK SINGAPORE

Uma Uma Ramen came from Fukuoka, Japan and has over 65 years of ramen-making experience behind them. Uma Uma Ramen’s name stems from “Wu Maru”, a Ramen shop established in 1953 by the father of Uma Uma Ramen’s current President, Masahiko Teshima. Upon taking over “Wu Maru” in 1994, Teshima-san renamed the venture “Uma Uma Ramen”; a play on the original name of the restaurant as well as a pun on the Japanese word for “tasty”.

As of now, Uma Uma still follows their age-old family recipe to make their noodles and to create a robust and aromatic tonkotsu stock for their customers. Signature dishes like the Mazesoba (dry-style ramen created in Singapore just for Uma Uma – it was such a hit the Japanese brought it to Japan!), Uma Uma Ramen and Chasiu Don are amongst the crowd favourite.

Nestled along the bustling Nihon Food Street at Millenia Walk, the venue boasts 3 sections within – bar counter seats, indoor seating area and a large alfresco area that is perfect for a celebratory round of drinks, a casual dinner or an after-work tipple. This restaurant is like a combination of an avant-garde arrangement of raw wood walls, timber furniture with traditional Japanese decor. We love the modern chic and laidback vibe, it makes the restaurant really interesting and reminds us of Japan.

We ordered the classic Uma Uma Ramen which consists of Hakata-style thin ramen noodles submerged in this delicious and rich Tonkotsu Broth with charsiew, spring onions, black fungus and egg, You can find a dollop of spicy miso on the charsiew. Not much kick to this though. The broth is made from pork bones and they are cooked over high heat for between 10 to 12 hours to unlock the flavours held in the bones into the broth. This method gives the soup its characteristic richness, just the way it is in Japan! They are also famous for their yakitori but we ordered the Mentaiko dashi maki Tamago with features rolled omelette with Mentaiko in the centre. The omelette is not overly cooked and has this soft pillowy texture.
