2. Folk Yard

If you've been searching for a hidden gem tucked away near Potong Pasir MRT Station, your quest ends at Folk Yard. This charming cafe has been on my radar for some time now, with its tantalizing reputation for sandwiches that leave taste buds dancing with delight. I vividly recall a previous attempt to savor their creations when, unfortunately, their coveted sandwiches were completely sold out. Determined not to be thwarted again, I set my alarm early and made my way to Folk Yard, and luck was on my side as I secured a comfortable indoor seat.

What sets Folk Yard apart is their expertise in crafting exquisite sandwiches, and they offer a delightful variety of 6 unique selections.

🥪 Breakfast Sandwich with curly fries

The first creation to grace our table was their Breakfast Sandwich, a marvel built upon a foundation of Shokupan bread. This canvas was generously layered with cheesy scrambled eggs. To add a touch of indulgence, maple-infused hashbrowns were nestled within the layers, offering a delightful contrast of flavors and textures. The pièce de résistance was the candied bacon, which lent a tantalizing twist of sweetness to each bite. As if that weren't enough, the accompanying curly fries, crisped to perfection, added an extra layer of satisfaction to our morning meal.

🥪 Grilled Cheese sandwich with sweet potato fries

Next up was the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The foundation for this creation was a perfectly toasted sourdough bread that crunched with each bite. What lay between those slices was a trio of cheeses, their flavors harmoniously intermingled and elevated by the vibrant zing of kimchi. As a side, we opted for the sweet potato fries, which were a delightful companion to the sandwich, offering a touch of sweetness and earthiness to the meal.

3. Tai Feng Wei (Potong Pasir)

Here at Tai Feng Wei Taiwan food 台豐味 is located in the Potong Pasir neighborhood. Those who work nearby would know it is located in a coffee shop opposite the Indian temple. Yishun 925 chicken rice is also there! They are very near to Potong Pasir MRT Station, only a 2 2-minute walk from the station.

We ordered the Braised pork rice, Egg Fried Rice with Fish Roe + Prawns, and also their Taiwanese popcorn chicken.

Their braised pork was well-marinated and tender enough. I feel like they were generous with the meat? There are quite a few long strips of pork. The sauce tastes herbaceous. Most likely herbs were used in making the sauce. This comes with a braised egg, peanuts, and spring onions.

The egg-fried rice was well-fried and fragrant but It was lacking in wok hei. The prawns used were succulent! The rice was also well-separated. I like that there's egg roe too. Gives the fried rice more texture. I think many places try to replicate the DTF-style fried rice everywhere now. This sure looks like it.

Popcorn chicken just tastes savory that's all, though it was well-fried and crispy. I wished it was saltier like 咸酥鸡.
Overall, it is a good place to satisfy Taiwanese food cravings. food was normal but not outstanding.

4. Blanco Court Fresh Fish Soup

Finally, try the Blanco Court Fresh Fish Soup at Potong Pasir for dinner. I think this was a pretty well-known shop and they have been around since 1978!

I decided to try the sliced fish soup with and without milk. The Batang fish was soft, fresh, and tender. I had high hopes for the soup but I have tasted better ones. The one with milk wasn't very nice and the milk kind of overshadows the broth. The one without milk was okay and not memorable.

5. Macpherson Minced Meat Noodle (Bak Chor Mee)

Springy noodles dry-tossed in a concoction of stewed mushroom sauce and chili which make for a robust bowl of noodles. There's also sliced pork, minced meat, pork liver, braised mushroom, and slices of fishcake in it. The pork lard increased the fragrance of the whole bowl. Take note that they're SUPER famous as one would notice the long snaking queue that starts from the stall. Coincidentally, I went there on a rainy day and the spicy kick really warmed me up. :)

6. RIVER SOUTH (HOE NAM) PRAWN NOODLE

Exploring the #hawkerfare of Potong Pasir. River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodle is a pretty well-known stall there and is located at a coffee shop at Tai Thong Crescent. They have their own shop along with a drinks stall. That goes to show their popularity.

I ordered the Prawn noodle soup with pork ribs. It comes with tender pork ribs that came off the bone effortlessly and 2 succulent prawns. The prawn broth was excellent; rich and full of crustacean goodness. Did not have much prawn soup before. but this was good!! I read that the prawn shells were fried in hot oil before simmering with pork ribs for more than 8 hours.

7. YUBA HUT AT POIZ RESIDENCES

I have been working in this area for a while now and never had the chance to try any good Japanese food around the area. This new Yuba Hut outlet opened quickly and satisfied my cravings! The price point is kind of affordable and most importantly they have mentaiko sushi which adds extra points to this restaurant. I went to dine at this restaurant on 3 occasions.

1) Udon with shrimp tempura
The udon was served in a bowl of light dashi stock with wakame seaweed, scallions, and fish cake. Light and palatable. The tempura is fried to a golden crisp. Not overcooked at all!

2) Tamago Mentaiko
The tamago was soft but not that moist inside. The addition of mentaiko made it better! All the better when it is lightly torched!

3) Salmon Don
Would have preferred the salmon sashimi to be of a thicker cut, but nonetheless this was fresh and goes well with the warm Japanese rice.

4) Salmon Mentaiko
Would have preferred more mentaiko on the salmon. :(

5) Unagi Mentaiko
The unagi was soft and the natural sweetness of it comes through strongly. I liked that the mentaiko was evenly spread out on the meat.

6) Salmon Aburi Don
The rice portion here is so pathetic, even though this is their signature dish. The rice was covered by torched salmon and topped with fish roe. Partially grilled with a smokey and creamy flavor! yummy!

8. Fullybooked cafe

Fullybooked cafe, a burgeoning café located in Potong Pasir, boasts a trendy industrial ambiance. Despite its hipster vibe, the menu offerings bear a resemblance to those of establishments like Ya Kun or Toast Box, adding an intriguing twist. Our selection comprised Nasi Lemak with Lemongrass Chicken Wing, Mee Rebus, Kaya Toast with Butter, and two cups of coffee. While the culinary experience proved satisfactory, it didn't reach exceptional heights. Among the ordered items, the kaya toast stood out with its well-toasted bread, boasting a crispy exterior and generous spread of thick butter. The Nasi Lemak offered decent value for money due to its generous serving of ingredients.

9. Yishun 925 Hainanese Chicken Rice

Yishun 925 Chicken Rice, a renowned chain with 6 outlets across Singapore, including one in Potong Pasir, is celebrated for its delectable chicken rice. Opting for their chicken rice set, I indulged in a drumstick, char siew roast pork rice, and a bowl of wanton soup. Accompanying the chicken was a small serving of achar. The rice boasted a delightful fluffiness and fragrance, with a pleasing oily sheen that prevented clumping. The chicken itself was exceptionally tender and juicy, complemented by a flavorful sauce drizzled over it, exuding both fragrance and a hint of saltiness.

10. Rise Bakehouse

Rise Bakehouse, a hidden gem cafe nestled in Potong Pasir, boasts a Korean-inspired salmon pink theme. The cafe features a picturesque large round window that offers a view of its charming interior, attracting many visitors keen on capturing the moment. Potong Pasir seems to be underrated when it comes to delightful cafes, with another nearby option adding to the allure. Their array of beautifully crafted bakes is also worth mentioning.

During my visit, I savored the Grape Yakult Honey Sencha, Strawberry Cheesecake Teacake, Daisy (Lemon Meringue Tart), and a cup of Latte. The standout was the Daisy, with its adorable daisy-shaped meringue and zesty lemon meringue filling. As for the Grape Yakult Honey Sencha, its unique blend of flavors, especially the refreshing grape Yakult foam, left a lasting impression. The Strawberry Cheesecake Teacake caught my eye with its charming appearance, featuring moist cake infused with homemade strawberry jam, dried strawberry pieces, and golden digestive biscuit crumbles. However, the cream cheese frosting was a bit underwhelming in terms of flavor.

11. Legacy Pork Noodles

Legacy Pork Noodles specializes in the iconic pork noodles commonly enjoyed in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and nearby regions. Their signature dish features slices of pork, pork offal like liver, kidney, or intestines, and crispy pork lard crumbs. It's distinct from the BCM (Bah Chor Mee) found in Singapore. Instead of the usual vinegar or ketchup, their sauce is a unique blend of black sauce and pork lard, while the minced pork is fried in a flavorful sauce. The noodles are generously coated in this sauce and topped with savory pork lard, offering a delightful umami taste. Despite its popularity, be prepared for a wait of up to an hour at this bustling stall! 😅

Some intriguing options include Toasted Cereal Vanilla Milk, Piedmont Hazelnut Crunch, Olive & Figs, We Are Golden, and Macadamia Sea Salt Fior Di Latte. Opted for double scoops, selecting the Toasted Marshmallow Oreos and Lemon Curd Speculoos flavors. The Toasted Marshmallow Oreos offered a unique twist, featuring creamy milk ice cream infused with Oreo bits and marshmallows. Meanwhile, the Lemon Curd boasted a delightful balance of tanginess and sweetness, with added speculoos bits for extra flavor.
