9 Japanese Ramen restaurants in Singapore you don't want to miss!

There are just too many ramen places in Singapore with most of them imported from overseas and some directly from the land of ramen, Japan. I have thus put together a list of ramen restaurants that I think are worth trying.

1) Otoko Ramen

Otoko Ramen is located at Alexandra Central which is right beside Park Hotel Alexandra. It's a cozy 20 seater shop and There weren't many people eating at Otoko Ramen during dinner time.

I ordered the shoyu ramen and gyoza. They also have free flow hard-boiled eggs. The broth is alright. Would have preferred it to be thicker and more flavorful. The egg could have been soft boiled like onsen egg with the runny egg yolk. The noodles are al dente too. Having eaten ramen in japan makes me abit skeptical about the standards in Singapore. This bowl of ramen could have been better.
The maze soba however has a better review than their standard ramen.

‘Truffle mazesoba’ Was in the area for decor and furniture shopping at Ikea and I recalled there was a ramen place right round the corner. Bit of google-fu and I found the place again. I remember having a broth based ramen the last time, so I decided to go for the dry mazesoba this time!                                            BROTH: As this is mazesoba, there is no broth to speak if, but the sauce base that was used at the bottom of the noodles had strong hints of umami and truffle flavour! The soup served on the side is nothing I’ve had in Japan before. In fact, the soup that served to ‘wet’ the noodles was a clear stock with a light chinese peppery taste, much like those you’d get in Singapore style wanton noodles.    CHASU/TOPPINGS: Generous servings of fresh mushrooms lightly glazed with oil, freshly cut green onions, chunky truffle dipped pork bits and a killer onsen egg with a dash of chilli powder rounded the stellar flavours. Bite after bite, the flavours kept each and every time 💯                                                        NOODS: At this point of the review, I can’t decide if the noodles or the toppings were the star of the dish. I think both were equally amazing. Noodles were chewy and firm with a good size that picked up all the toppings extremely well. EAT IF: Overheard the chef serve his ramen in Japanese to the local servers. It’s one thing for the chef to be Japanese, another for the ramen to be excellent. I’m happy that the chef incorporated the Singapore side-soup style into his ramen well! Glad to say this is the best mazesoba I’ve had in Singapore so far! Definitely has that truffle umami flavour 👌🏻 Price: $$, score 9.5/10 #ramen #singaporeramen #ramenreviews #ramenlife #ramenlover #rameninstagram #foodphotography ##food #foodie

2) Kanshoku Ramen Bar

Kanshoku is a Japanese Food restaurant specializing in Ramen and it means 'to finish eating every last bit of your food' in Japanese. They started their first outlet at Ion Orchard with zero F&B business and has since come a long way with 3 outlets to create an experience that fulfills this ambitious intention. They serve Hakata Style ramen which is the thin kind of ramen.

I remember them being one of the first to have the truffle ramen and that they are super popular. I ordered the Truffle Ramen Dry ($16.90). I would have preferred them to serve the ramen slightly hotter but this is the Bomb!! The truffle is super prominent here and slurping the al dente noodles is so shiok! I can't even express the taste explosion in my mouth. The char siew is quite tender and easy to chew.

3) UMA UMA RAMEN

Uma Uma Ramen originates from Fukuoka, Japan and they have over 65 years of ramen-making experience behind them.

As of now, Uma Uma still follows their age-old family recipe to make their noodles and to create a robust and aromatic tonkotsu stock for their customers. Signature dishes like the Mazesoba (dry-style ramen created in Singapore just for Uma Uma – it was such a hit the Japanese brought it to Japan!), Uma Uma Ramen, and Chasiu Don are amongst the crowd favorite.

Nestled along the bustling Nihon Food Street at Millenia Walk, the venue boasts 3 sections within – bar counter seats, indoor seating area, and a large alfresco area that is perfect for a casual dinner or an after-work tipple. This restaurant is like a combination of an avant-garde arrangement of raw wood walls, timber furniture with traditional Japanese decor. I love the modern chic and laidback vibe, it makes the restaurant really interesting and reminds us of Japan.
We ordered the classic Uma Uma Ramen which consists of Hakata-style thin ramen noodles submerged in this delicious and rich Tonkotsu Broth with charsiew, spring onions, black fungus, and egg, You can find a dollop of spicy miso on the charsiew. Not much kick to this though. The broth is made from pork bones and they are cooked over high heat for between 10 to 12 hours to unlock the flavors held in the bones into the broth. This method gives the soup its characteristic richness, just the way it is in Japan! They are also famous for their yakitori but we ordered the Mentaiko dashi maki Tamago with features rolled omelet with Mentaiko in the center. The omelet is not overly cooked and has this soft pillowy texture.

4) KONJIKI HOTOTOGISU SINGAPORE 金色不如帰

This ramen shop has been on my list for the longest time and with their Michelin bib gourmand status... it is a must-try!

With a larger space than their outlet in Tokyo, this outlet came anticipating more customers as it is not only accessible from City Hall MRT and also the lunch crowd! They have an open concept kitchen too like most Japanese ramen shops do.
I ordered the Shoyu Hamaguri Soup Ramen. This comes with thick pork belly and thinly sliced charsiu and garnished with prime ingredients such as black truffle paste, porcini oil, and porcini flakes. The truffle elevated the flavors of the soup base(tonkotsu broth, clam stock, and dashi stock). This bowl of goodness is priced at $14.90. Affordable not?

5) LE SHRIMP RAMEN

Le Shrimp Ramen is the perfect fusion of Chinese and Japanese culture, heavily inspired by the Japanese Ramen Broth and the Chinese La Mian. Their specialty broths are of cos Shrimp ramen and the usual tonkotsu broth.

The tonkotsu broth has a rich and creamy texture that is achieved by long hours of simmering with pork bones. Super palatable and full of collagen. The shrimp broth is the perfect marriage of fresh sea prawns, pork bones, and Chinese spices, resulting in a tangerine orange-hued broth. Enjoy the best of both worlds here with the premium quality ingredients freshly prepared daily. Definitely one of kind restaurants in Singapore.

The Le Signature Trio Shrimp Ramen ($19.90) is the recommended ramen here when I enquired.
What's in the bowl: Big Prawns, Handmade ebiko prawn paste, and Prawn dumplings.
The prawn dumplings were substantial in size offering good value. Also, the prawns were fresh and the ebiko prawn paste lends a nice crunch. The la mian was also not overcooked. I was pleasantly surprised by how distinct and rich the flavors that came through were.

Overall, the Chinese la mien noodles absorbed the flavourful Japanese shrimp broth well and every spoonful was an umami explosion.

6) Ramen Nagi

I first tried Ramen Nagi at their Shinjuku Golden-Gai outlet. The one that I tried was a broth made from dried baby sardines but this one in Singapore was Tonkotsu based. The ramen chain has since expanded throughout the world with more than 40 outlets and counting.

Handmade noodles in Ramen Nagi's award-winning traditional tonkotsu pork broth. I tried the ORIGINAL BUTAO KING and I love how rich this is!

7) Afuri Ramen

This is also one of the Ramen I have tried in Japan before. I remember visiting the Harajuku outlet many years ago. Their first Singapore outlet was relatively new having opened in June last year in the newly revamped Funan mall.

I ordered the Yuzu Shio Ramen. The shio broth had a chicken and seafood-based stock and the yuzu added a refreshing citrusy touch.

8) SO RAMEN

創 (Sō) Ramen is one of the better affordable ramen places in Singapore which is committed to providing the best ramen experience. They only use premium wheat flour to make their ramen for an optimal combination with their broths. They also offer 5 kinds of broth, namely, Shoyu, Miso, Tonkotsu, Uobushi Tonkotsu, and Spicy Tonkotsu, each simmered for hours to a rich flavor. They have five outlets in Singapore.

Their signature ramen is the Grand Tonkotsu Ramen. It contains the three treasures of Toroniku (braised pork cheek), Cha Shu (braised pork belly in cha shu sauce) and Buta Kakuni (braised pork belly in special sauce). This tonkotsu ramen has its flavor elevated with the garnishing of black onion sauce.

Opening Hours: Mon - Fri & eve of PH: 11.30am - 10pm
Sat, Sun & PH: 11am - 10pm

9) Kanada-Ya

This is another Japanese Ramen chain but hailing from Fukuoka instead. They are apparently quite famous there with outlets in London, Hong Kong, and now in Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) mall in Singapore.

Spicy Yuzu ramen and Kotteri Tonkotsu Ramen
The tonkotsu (pork bone) is boiled to keep the broth clear of impurities. The soup is then simmered for 20 hours to remove any unwanted odors or bitterness. The sauce used in the ramen consists of Konbu, shiitake mushrooms, and all kinds of vegetables. You get rich, creamy, and umami-filled broth that is truly one-of-a-kind.

For the spicy yuzu ramen, the broth is made from their pork bone broth combined with chicken broth. The broth is infused with yuzu miso thus having the citrusy taste, further enhanced by a dollop of spicy miso paste.

They're also famous for their truffle ramen which you can consider ordering if you're a truffle lover.

Check out their menu here.

Address: 10 Paya Lebar Road, Paya Lebar Quarter, #03-30 PLQ Mall, 409057
Opening Hours: 11am - 10pm
