Something Good Out of This Trying Time: Two Renowned F&B Brands, Joy Luck Yum Sing and Bedok Bak Chor Mee, Collaborate to Uplift Each Other

Enjoy local heritage food and Hong Kong’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage delights under one roof.

Joy Luck Yum Sing’s Egg Tart, HK Milk Tea, and Bedok Bak Chor Mee (Soup)

Since the onset of COVID-19, the F&B businesses have been battered due to dining and work-from-home restrictions. Though a stalwart in the industry, Bedok Bak Chor Mee (BCM) was similarly not spared. Meanwhile, despite these challenges, Joy Luck Teahouse and its offshoot Joy Luck Yum Sing started a year ago in the midst of the pandemic to bring the best of Hong Kong snacks and beverages to homebound Singaporeans. Now the two brands are joining forces to offer a unique experience combining local heritage food Bedok style Bak Chor Mee, and Hong Kong’s culinary treasures under one roof!

Through this collaboration, Joy Luck Yum Sing will offer its entire range of signature Hong Kong-style drinks and popular egg tarts at Bedok BCM's flagship Circular Road outlet. Those working in the central business district can now look forward to a feast of local and Hong Kong delights!

The idea of collaboration was conceived by the Director of Bedok BCM Mr. Chong Jin Siew:  “There is currently no dessert or bubble tea offering along Circular Road. Joy Luck Yum Sing's egg tarts, Pearl of the Orient (Hong Kong Milk Tea with Bubbles), and Pearls of Joy series (which includes Lychee Fizz, Sour Plum Fizz, and Honey Lemon Fizz) will certainly be a welcomed addition. Furthermore, they make a wonderful accompaniment to our offerings.”

Hong Kong’s culinary treasures and a perennially beloved hawker delight

Whet your appetite with Joy Luck Yum Sing’s popular pastry snack: egg tarts from Hoover Cake Shop (豪華餅店). There are two versions of the egg tarts: pastry crust and cookie crust. Smooth, wobbly, and creamy, the egg custard filling is made with high-quality eggs and butter, hitting just the right note of sweetness.

For the main course, Bak Chor Mee is a traditional dish with its origin traced back to Teochew immigrants to Singapore in the early days of our history. Bedok BCM serves up two versions of the dish: soup and dry. Preparation for the stock is a labor-intensive process, taking over 12 hours of simmering amongst other ingredients, pork bones by Sakura Pork, air-flown fortnightly from Australia.

For maximum flavor and nutrition, Sakura Pork (which are exclusively young female pigs!) uses advanced Japanese Lactobacillus Technology which results in lower cholesterol levels and high natural-occurring flavors due to higher amino acids. The high-quality pork is transported chilled, never frozen from Australia. And finally, traditional crispy sole fish and pork lard are added to the already-flavourful soup, creating more depth of flavor.

The dry version comes with a delicious black sauce. Unlike other versions where it is poached, the minced pork is first stir-fried. Made in-house, the special chili sauce packs a spicy but flavorful punch. For its delightful offerings, Bedok BCM is voted the Diners’ Choice 2021 for Boat Quay in the competition organized by Singapore River One.

Pairing with Hong Kong-style beverages

Wash the food down with Joy Luck Yum Sing’s array of Hong Kong-style beverages. Our Hong Kong-style bubble tea is named Pearl of the Orient. It is made with Joy Luck Teahouse’s milk tea, complemented with a generous amount of brown sugar tapioca balls. The Hong Kong-style milk tea follows Kam Kee’s secret recipe that calls for a blend of superior-quality tea leaves imported from Sri Lanka. European full cream evaporated milk is added to the brew to lend a moderately sweet flavor.

Joy Luck Yum Sing's Pearl of Joy series is a fusion of Hong Kong and Singapore influences. The series uses healthier pearls: Seaweed Jelly Pearls and Lychee Popping Pearls. The seaweed pearls are firmer than the usual tapioca pearls and have fewer calories. The Lychee Popping Pearls have a delightful texture — bite into each pearl and the juice will ooze out.

There are 3 flavors in this series, Lychee Fizz 荔枝蘇打, Sour Plum Fizz 酸梅蘇打, and Honey Lemon Fizz 檸檬蜜蘇打. Boasting a sweet fragrance, lychee is a popular fruit in Hong Kong, used as an ingredient for many beloved Hong Kong desserts. A palate cleanser, sour plum invigorates the senses with its sweet-sour note. Boasting medicinal properties, honey lemon is used traditionally to soothe the throats; it is also good for the vocal cords.
