12 Japanese and Korean food stalls in Singapore you don't want to miss!

As Singapore is multi-racial, we have amongst us many Japanese and Korean people and It is not easy to locate a hawker stall that sells good Japanese and Korean cuisines. I have tried Japanese rice bowls, ramen, Korean noodles, army stew, bibimbap, and unagi don. Hopefully, you can find something you like too.

1) Oishii corner

If you're looking for Halal Japanese food at Toa Payoh, Oishii corner is an unassuming Halal Japanese hawker stall at Toa Payoh Kim Keat Palm Food Centre. It is opened by a Malay couple with the husband doing most of the cooking.

They have a wide array of affordable Japanese food ranging from Japanese rice bowls, udon to ramen. Don't go here expecting restaurant standards but the price point is quite worth to me.

Opening Hours: 11am - 7pm daily
Closed on Friday

It’s not every day you see a hawker store selling blue butterfly pea rice. LAGOON IN A BOWL is located in Amoy Street Food Centr. Their menu consists of sous vide salmon and Wagyu Beef.
For $10, you get a thick slab of salmon that was topped with torched mentaiko. There’s also runny sous vide egg, corn, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber. The rice doesn’t need any sauce as there’s sesame dressing on the cucumber, generous mentaiko dressing, and salmon and you break the runny yolk, mix these together and you made a Creamy mess. Wouldn’t mind paying again for this healthy bowl of lagoon.

Kazan Japanese Cuisine is located at Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre. They have the most affordable Unagi set at $8.

It was difficult to locate this shop in the Chinatown complex market. They serve me a huge slab of Unagi in a long bento box. I thought that this was kind of underutilized as there were a lot of spaces? The unagi is glazed with their sauce and kind of glisten under the light, giving the surface a good glow. The meat was sweet from the sauce and very tender but there are so many small bones.. so it was abit weird when I was eating. The bones are totally edible though.

4) Donya Japanese Cuisine

Come here for affordable Mentai Salmon don! Donya Japanese Cuisine is located at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh and is walking distance from Braddell MRT station.
I ordered the Mentai maki($5.80) and Mentai salmon don($8.80). They are actually serving restaurant-grade food here which is worth paying for. The mentai maki is served generously with mentaiko sauce then lightly torched before finishing off with fish roe. It is the same for the salmon don. I liked that there isn't much sauce underneath the salmon. I preferred my rice to have minimal sauce.

Buta Kin is totally unassuming but do not be too quick to judge as you may just miss this gem here at Beauty World Centre. Hawker center is located on the last floor. You can get a complete set of tonkotsu ramen at $6.90. Mind you.. this bowl of ramen comes with jap onsen egg and thick roasted pork slices. The broth was made using pork and chicken bones and could have been thicker and more flavorful but came out light yet comforting. This is so worth it just for the price point alone and is also palatable.

6) Ramen Taisho

For authentic and affordable ramen options!
Ramen Taisho is a ramen stall located inside Maxwell Food Centre. They had a good variety of ramen with dry and dipping noodles option. I ordered the Gyokai Tonkotsu Ramen Deluxe ($11.80) which comes with extra charshu and ajitama.
Expect Springy noodles in a rich seafood tonkotsu broth with the 2 Pork Chashu, 1 Chicken Chashu, and ajitama. The soup had a thick consistency and was bursting with rich tonkotsu flavor which was the highlight of this ramen.

7) Pepper Bowl

Bet ya'll never hear of this hidden gem Pepper Bowl
at Amoy Street Food Centre! Their specialty is their Black pepper pork/beef rice bowls. They have spring onion beef/pork rice and hor fun too. The beef was smooth and tender with sweetness from the onions and peppery heat from the black pepper sauce. The onsen egg just makes everything better and much creamier when I stirred them thoroughly.

The Burning Oak is located on the second level of the Simpang Bedok food centre. They do have an array of Japanese dishes. You can find dishes such as Truffle wagyu ($16), Iberico Pork Cheek ($12), and Wagyu Rump Cap ($14). All dishes are served with an egg FYI.
I ordered the wagyu and pork cheek combo which was only $16. I feel it is quite affordable considering the amount wagyu given. They have also appeared on Food King and are food king good. The wagyu is tender but some parts quite chewy. The pork cheek is good but I find it a bit salty?

Beauty world centre seriously has alot of hidden gems lo... Pink Candy is an affordable Korean hawker stall located at the open-air hawker center at the Beauty World Centre. They have an array of Korean home-made dishes such as kimbab, fried chicken, army stews, pancakes, noodles, amongst other authentic Korean dishes.

I ordered the Jjamppong which is the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup. Priced at $12.90.. but you can expect an array of seafood inside such as prawns and mussels. The soup is thick and rich. One glance at the redness of the soup, one would expect this to be spicy but it is really not.

10) Man's Kitchen & Waker Chicken

This is the place to go if you're looking for nice Korean Fried Chicken in a hawker stall! The waker original chicken seems more like breast meat to me? If it is breast meat, it is quite nicely done. The chicken is not tough at all.

Aside from the Original that I am having, they also have a variety of flavors such as Soy, Sweet Spicy, and Honey Butter. They also have some delectable dipping sauces such as honey mustard, mayonnaise, wasabi-mayo, and chili ketchup for you to dip your chicken in.

They also have Army Stew for 1 person which costs only $6.50. There's instant noodles, sausages, luncheon meat, cabbages, onion, etc inside this small pot of army stew. This comes with rice and kimchi~ omg I love it! The store feels quite authentic to me with real Koreans cooking. They also have bibimbap, and kimchi fried rice too.

11) Seoul Shiok

Seoul Shiok is a Korean hawker stall located at Ang Mo Kio which sells inexpensive Korean cuisines such as Army Stew, Bibimbap, soups, Korean fried chicken, ramen, bulgogi. japchae, rabokki, and a variety of sides such as tteokbokki, dumplings, and kimchi.

I ordered their bibimbap and Korean soybean soup. I love bibimbap for being a healthier option and nth beats stirring them in gochujang for that spicy oomph. Even though it was hot, I couldn't help but order a bowl of soup to go with the rice. The soybean soup comes with lots of veggies inside. Mine comes with tofu and chicken.

JW Korean Food Story is such a hidden gem. Located along Bukit Timah, people seldom venture into Sixth Ave for food, although from their Facebook and IG page, this one is apparently well-known in the Muslim community. Yes, JW Korean Food Story is Halal and also Muslim-owned. I was there to try out their Army Stew. For those of you who don't know, Army stew is popular Korean comfort food that incorporated processed meat such as luncheon meat, hot dog and sausages.
